  1. CAN YOU FIND THE BEAT? Your challenge is to find and demonstrate the beat in each Beat Center. Can you do it? Objectives: Students will work in cooperative teams to play and move to music. Demonstrate the steady beat through creative movement or playing instruments. Express feelings through creative movement. Listen and respond to music from various styles and time periods.

  2. BEAT CENTERS 1-JUMP-STOMP-PAT-CLAP-MOVE 2-BEAN BAG TOSS 3-RHYTHM STICKS 4-SCARVES 5-BOUNCING BALLS.

  3. TEACHING TIPS I created a playlist that includes music of all genre’s, from various time periods. I set some ground rules for the activity like; no talking, no playing around and the consequence. I have the students sit out and count to 20 and then come back to their center and try again. I put students into cooperative groups and then explain each center by modeling the activity. It’s important for the students to explain what they are doing so I ask questions like; “What are we showing? How is this group showing the ?” Students repeat the word several times during question and answer so that they connect the activity to the concept.

  4. Teaching tips continued… At the ball and Bean Bag Centers I teach the students to count the beat, but choose to play only beat one or beat one and three. Control is more important than speed. I play two songs in each center-you could do three- I choose one that is slow and one that is fast. I also try to choose songs that are from different genre’s, classical and country, for example. I walk around the classroom helping students find the beat and modeling the way to show the beat. I give lot’s of positive praise to the students who demonstrate that they understand how to show the beat. “I like the way John tosses on the beat.” “Claire is doing a fantastic job of swaying to the beat.” “Stephanie really knows how to move to the beat.” HAVE FUN!
