  2. What is an animal? • Many-celled organisms that are made of different kinds of cells • Most have nucleus and organelles surrounded by membrane • Cannot make their own food • Digest their own food • Can move from place to place

  3. Symmetry • To study animals, you must look at their symmetry. • Symmetry- arrangement of individual parts of an object • Most animals have radial or bilateral symmetry • Radial: body parts arranged in circle around central point • Bilateral: have parts that are mirror images

  4. Symmetry • Some have no definite shape. • Asymmetrical • Bodies can’t be divided into matching halves • Examples: • Radial: jellyfish • Bilateral: lobsters • Asymmetrical: sponges

  5. Animal Classification Animals divided into two groups: vertebrates invertebrates Vertebrates: have backbone Invertebrates: no backbone

  6. Invertebrates • Invertebrates divided into two smaller groups: • Sponges • Cnidarians • Flatworms • Roundworms • Mollusks • Annelids • Arthropods • Echinoderms
