  2. Fact of Rate • Immigration played an important role in American history throughout the time. • Number of immigrants, both legal and illegal, has increased recently, remarkably during the 20th century • America becomes a big melting pot with various cultures from many different countries. • These immigrants may affect American society in some ways. • Varying in ethnicity

  3. Issues • The number of undocumented immigrants in the country has increased more than 40 percent since 2000. Every year, more than a half-million people come illegally or illegally overstay their visas • Obama’s plan • Create secure border • Improve immigration system • Remove incentives to enter illegally • Bring people out of shadows: give them chances to study English and become citizens • Work with Mexico to decrease illegal immigrants

  4. Argument: American Views • Blame immigrants for population outgrowth in recent decades • Immigrants’ cultures change American culture negatively • Being seen as burden to national economic and social downfall today. • Mess up order of society Miley and her friends are pulling eyes to an Asian, which was socially blamed for this racially offensive gesture and setting a bad sample to teens.

  5. Argument: Immigrants • Seeking equality and supports in community • Struggling with bilingual education and biculturalism • Having languages and culture problem to be assimilated • Hardly accepted by native-born Americans • Being treated unfairly in workplace and public places

  6. Argument: Immigrants

  7. Is American Still Be the Melting Pot? • The United States need to retain its title of a melting pot in order to remain vibrant • These people are from the countries across the planet who have come here, brought their beliefs and traditions, and assimilated by trying to learn the new language and culture. • “We must calibrate the flow of immigrants into the US to the needs of the economy, mindful that immigration has adversely affected low-income American citizens, disproportionately African-American and Hispanic. But the flow must also be calibrated to the country's capacity to assure acculturation of the immigrants” (Lawrence, “The end of multiculturalism”)
