  1. IEEM552 - Human Computer SystemsToday: Introduction : Why HCI?February 2, 1999 Dr. Vincent Duffy - IEEM http://iesu5.ieem.ust.hk/dfaculty/duffy/552 email: vduffy@ust.hk 1

  2. Format • 1st half of each class: Discussion of Human-Computer Systems tools and design issues. • 2nd half of each class:- Discussion and analysis of research cases related to current topics. 2

  3. Recent examples/papers • Research papers and cases will be discussed each week and focus will be on research ideas, applicability, theoretical contribution, methodologies, analysis, presentation of results, conclusions drawn and future research directions. 3

  4. Textbooks • User Interface Design by Ray Eberts, 1994 • Applied Statistics and the SAS Programming Language, Ronald Cody and Jeffrey K. Smith, 4th Edition, 1997 4

  5. Week 2, 4, 6, 7 • HBS Case study - MS-Word for MS-DOS Systems- Changing the User Interface • Management in a computerized environment. practical aspects of H-C systems - real world cases HBS case study - IBM Computer Conferencing - Effects on the existing management processes. Management concerns and exposures. • Usability principles, Menu displays. • Discuss strategies for looking at research articles. • Methods for testing effectiveness, mental workload measures. • Hazards in conducting and interpreting HCI studies. • Introduction to Interface Design and Visual C++/VB. 5

  6. Week 9-11 • HBS Case -Center for Machine Intelligence: Computer Support for Cooperative Work (CSCW), Video. • Challenges related to system design, managerial appications, technology transfer, and organizational transformation. Video. • Introduction to CSCW, telepresence and teleoperation. Review last research paper. • Demonstration of automatic voice/speech recognition software and applications. 6

  7. Other weeks • Week 3 - Lunar New Year Holiday • Week 5 - March 1, OSHC Symposium (Monday 9-6pm) • no class meeting on Tuesday 6th. • Week 8 - Exam 1 • Week 12, 13 - discussion of project content • Week 14 - Project presentations 7

  8. Instructor philosophy • Students should expect to spend approximately 6 hours per week outside of class. • A great deal of emphasis during the semester will be on process rather than on application. 8

  9. Grading • Class participation (10%) • During each class - Questions of the Day (QOTD) • Homework (10%) • Students will be responsible for submitting Questions on the reading or answers • Oral Presentation (10%) • Midterm Exam (20%) • closed book closed notes • Course Project (25%) • Final Exam (25%) 9

  10. QOTD • Q.1. Why do we care about HCI? What do we want/need from new computer applications? • See video : SIGCHI, CHI’98 • webpage: http://www.acm.org/sigchi • Q.2. Why do we care about HCI? What is the purpose of ‘Intro to Computer Science’? • What is the purpose of HCI? • Q.4.What can an IE contribute to Human-Computer Studies? Programming? What else? 10

  11. Q.1. What do we want/need from new computer applications? Why do we care about HCI? • What do these segments illustrate? • Build-it (4 min) • innovative industrial applications • I-Steer (4 min) • functionality/information access • New Game Concept (6 min) • entertainment • OLGA (5 min) • interactivity • WebTOC (5 min) • productivity improvements • Elastic Windows (5 min) • better usability • and one left out?…… • eg. internet communities social/group dynamics • let’s come back to the other part 11

  12. Q.1 & Q.2. What is the purpose of ‘Intro to Computer Science’? • Teaches functionality & how to meet the functional requirements of the system • Is that enough? • What is the purpose of HCI? • Concern about usability • all systems have a functionality and usability requirement • As IEs why do we care about HCI? • As IEs, Project managers, and PG researchers we care about HCI from the Systems perspective • we also care about developing usable products • and consideration from a systematic approach • research perspective • theoretical and experimental perspective 12

  13. QOTD • Q.3. What is significant about the Wright Brothers? What is the connection to HCI? • Q.4 What do you expect to gain from this course? What can an understanding of Human-Computer Studies contribute to your world/life? (specify work or personal) 13

  14. Q.3. What is significant about the Wright Brothers? What is the connection to HCI? • Consider: headline New York Times • from the Video ‘The Wright Brothers Flying Machine • ‘The world will have to wait millions of years for powered flight’ • Yet only 9 days after Langley failed, in 1903, the Wright Brothers suceeded 14

  15. Q.3. What is significant about the Wright Brothers? What is the connection to HCI? • What contributed to their success? • And what does this have to do with HCI?! • experimentation • consideration of experiments in relation to theory • recall • Davinci, 1st to design a flying machine • Caley, first systematic study • Lilianthal, miscalculated, crashed and died • Langley, had 52hp engine • while Orville & Wilbur had 12hp • Wright Brothers, • through experimentation, and many trials, developed understanding 15

  16. Homework • Please submit by noon: 3 sentence summary of the two conference papers • also please ask 1 question about each of the conference papers • finally. Please read the 2 cases. • Please submit by email (no attachments) by noon of Tuesday (week 2)
