  2. The personal commentary format is as follows: Sentence#1: topic sentence (TS) Sentence#2: concrete detail (CD) Sentence#3: commentary (CM) Sentence#4: commentary (CM)

  3. Here is an example Sentence#1: (TS) I hate shopping for Christmas. Sentence#2: (CD) For example, the lines always have five or six people waiting for one cashier. Sentence#3: (CM) It takes forever to pay for something. Sentence#4: (CM) By the time I’m finished, I’m exhausted from the frantic running.

  4. A topic is given below. Write one concrete detail for #2 and two commentary sentences for #3 and #4. Sentence#1 (TS): The walls in this classroom are dull and boring. Sentence#2 (CD): For example, Sentence#3 (CM): Sentence#4 (CM):

  5. Steve’s Sample The walls in this classroom are dull and boring. For example, they don’t have anything on them. Putting some pictures on the walls would make the room lively. Then our class would look real.

  6. Annette’s Sample The walls in this classroom are dull and boring. For example, they don’t have any posters or calendars on them. I think you should get some cool pictures to put up. Right now it’s like being in a giant cardboard box.

  7. Now try more CM practice. Sentence#1 (TS): Going to the mall on the weekend is fun. Sentence#2 (CD): For example, Sentence#3 (CM): Sentence#4 (CM):

  8. Try it again! Sentence#1 (TS) My school is a good place to be. Sentence#2 (CD) For example, Sentence#3 (CM) Sentence#4 (CM)

  9. Here is a sample by a 9th grader on the topic of a teenager’s bedroom. My room is a mess. For example, it smells like rotting pizza and there are clothes and trash scattered all over the floor. When I walk in there, I feel like I’ve just entered a disaster area. If they gave out an award for the messiest room, I would surely win first prize.

  10. Here is a sample by a 9th grader on the topic of teenage problems. I bet that somewhere, if you were to look at the word teenager, you would see it meant the person with the most problems. Every morning I wake up at 5:30-6:00 and right away my problems begin—my homework is nowhere to be found, my socks don’t match, my sister locks herself in the bathroom to do whatever it is she does, and my mother is yelling, “Hurry Up!”, like a broken record. So it’s no wonder that I like to hurry to get dressed and out of the house, sort of like an escaping fugitive, to get to school and, surprisingly enough, more problems. Once at school, I’ve got to deal with my teacher about my homework not being turned in, or why am I talking? Or just lots of little stuff that gives us teenagers stress wrinkles, and will later in our lives make us hags.
