  3. Victorian Era • A period of Queen Victoria’s reign (June 20,1837 – January 22, 1901) • It was an era of peace, affection, success, and nationalism • People were interested in literature, theatre, arts, music, drama, and opera • The death of Queen Victoria signified the end of the era

Elizabeth Barrett Browning • Born March 6, 1806 in Kelloe, England - died June 29,1861 in Florence, Italy • Born to a wealthy family • One of the greatest poets during the Victorian Era • She married Robert Browning in secret and moved to Italy with him, where she had her son and lived happily • Her health receded and eventually died in her husband’s arms

Sonnet 43 • Belongs to a series of poems called Sonnets from the Portuguese (1845-1846), published in 1850 • It is a love poem written as a sonnet describing her love to her husband Robert Browning • A sonnet is a poem consisting of 14 lines, a rhyme scheme, and meter • The theme is intense love • The meter of the poem is iambic pentameter • The rhyme scheme is ABBA-AABA-CDC-DCD

  7. analysis • Line 1: The poet asks “how does she love her lover”, so she decides to count the ways. • Lines 2-4: The poet describes her love as 3 dimensional, filling up the “depth and breadth and height” of her soul. She loves him in every direction till it’s out of sight. • Lines 5-6: Even though the poet loves her man with a passion, she also loves him in a regular way, day and night. • Lines 7-8: Her love is free and pure and she doesn’t ask for praise or appreciation.

  8. Analysis • Lines 9-10: The poet feels grief for previous deaths. Now she uses the love she had for them to love her husband, so that love is not wasted. • Lines 11-12: Her faith in goodness and purity changed into faith for her love. • Lines 13-14: She will love him even after her death, where they will meet in heaven.

Tools and devices • Imagery • Line 1: The poet uses the words “height”, “depth”, and “breadth” to show her wide range of love for her husband • Line 6: The poet says she will love him “by sun and candle-light”, meaning night and day • Symbolism • Line 12-13: Her smiles, tears, and breath symbolize her love for her husband, through everything that they go through
