  2. What are you looking for? • What are your career goals? • What can you see yourself doing long term? • How long do you want to be in school (one year, two years, four years, etc)? • Do you need a small school or do you thrive in the Big University environment?

Where do I start my search? • Ask a teacher, mentor or guidance counselor • Ask a friend or family member who’s been to or currently attending college • Internet – do a search • www.collegeboard.com(click on ‘for students’) • www.offtocollege.com • www.nacacnet.org(click on ‘student resources’)

Where do I start my search? • Call up or visit a college admissions office • tell them what you want to do & ask if they offer a program that can help you do it • ask what it will take (time & effort) to achieve your goal • find out the requirements (Cumulative GPA, ACT scores, etc) • ask what you can do if you don’t meet those requirements • College fairs • Your guidance or career office will have info on local fairs • Check out www.nacacnet.org for National Fairs • Baltimore National Fair ~ Monday, Sept 21, 9am – Noon, 6pm – 8pm and Tuesday, Sept 22, 9am – Noon • Greater Washington DC National Fair ~ Tuesday, September 29, 9am – 1:30pm and 6pm – 8pm

  5. Steps to take in getting started • Submit an application. • only apply to places you are seriously considering attending. • ask the admission rep if they waive application fees • ask the admission rep about their application deadline • make sure youcompletely fill out the application

  6. Steps to take in getting started • Submit all required materials immediately after submitting the application • official high school transcript • official ACT or SAT scores • AP or IB credits/scores – if you’re taking such courses • essay – if required • Letters of recommendation

  7. Steps to take in getting started • Follow up with your Admissions Counselor • that’s what we’re here for!! • check on the status of your application ~ many institutions have online access • make sure you sign and return all required forms

  8. Fast Facts for College Admissions • When you have the opportunity, call the admission office to schedule a campus tour or attend an ‘open house’ event. It helps you to get a feel for the environment of that institution. • Take the ACT and or SAT exams no later than your junior year of high school. • For free test prep, visit http://www.actstudent.org/testprep/index.html or http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/prep_one/prep_one.html.

Scholarships & Financial Aid • Apply for financial aid on or after January 1st of your senior year • FAFAS application is located at www.fafsa.ed.gov • March 15this the priority date for grant funds. • Students and parents must apply for a PIN number • Make sure you have all school codes • FAFSA on the web worksheet (great for 1st timers)

Scholarships & Financial Aid • Most scholarships require that you are accepted to a college, so the sooner you apply to the college, the sooner you can get accepted. • Get things rolling before or no later than Decemberof your senior year. • Make sure you know the scholarship deadlines!! • For free scholarship searches, check out the following • www.fastweb.com • www.collegeboard.com(click on ‘pay for college’)

Fast Facts for College Admissions • Always keep up with the letters you get from the schools you’re interested (i.e. missing items letters, acceptance letters, and scholarship/financial aid award letters, registration info, etc.). Make sure you return the items needed to complete your enrollment process (i.e. housing forms, registration and orientation forms, etc.) • If you’re not sure about something or have concerns, call or visit your high school guidance counselor and/or college admissions counselor.

There are certain skills that we expect you to have when you come to us, but we don’t expect that you come in knowing all the facts. We help enhance the skills you have obtained in high school. So take this time to absorb all of the wonderful academic and social opportunities college can and will bring!!
