Monday, November 8, 2010Silent Focus Listen/ Watch: The Harvard Class, Justice, as they discuss this idea:  During the Civil War, men drafted into war had the option of hiring substitutes to fight in their place. Many students say they find that policy unjust, arguing that it is unfair to allow the affluent to avoid serving and risking their lives by paying less privileged citizens to fight in their place. This leads to a classroom debate about war and the draft. Is today’s voluntary army open to the same objection? Are there some things that money just can’t buy? What are they?

Tuesday, November 9, 2010Silent Focus • Listen/Read: As we read Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s « The Charge of the Light Brigade » • Write: What are some interesting techniques that this author uses in his poetry? Borrow a line and write your own. Write about anything else that this poem brings to mind.

Friday, November 12, 2010Extended Silent Focus • Current Events Magazines • Read all of the Magazine • Answer the Skills Sheet Questions Together (on separate paper) • Write a summary paragraph on the main story ( 5 W’s) • Write an opinion paragraph on the debate topic (What do you think? Which side are you on? Give your reasons) • Also answer the “Analyze the Graph,” “Which Word Works,” and “Know the News” questions (on the same separate paper) • E.C. Crossword Puzzle

  7. Thursday, November 11, 2010 Silent Focus • Listen/ Read: The lyrics to Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” written by Paul Simon. • Write: What is this song about? Borrow a line and write your own. What does this song make you think of.

You may be able to find a better one, and you might want to take a couple to see if it’s accurate.) • Write two paragraphs about what you found out. • Due Monday: 20 points
