  3. August 2009 Newsletter page 2 From the desk of our DOM: Seminar: “Reaching the Hindus and East Indians in the Floyd County Area” September 17, 2009 10AM-12Noon Fellowship Baptist Church Light Lunch to Follow: RSVP to reserve your Lunch to 706-291-0904 During the week of July 11-17, 22 people from 9 Floyd County churches were on mission to West Virginia. The task we were assigned was to have VBS in the small town of Coalwood. Coalwood , at one time, was a town of over 2000 but since the closing of the coal mine has dwindled to 300 more or less (depending on who you talk to). The area has no industry and is suffering economically. The only jobs available require a significant drive which adds to the stress of survival. While the economy is a huge problem it is not the greatest need in this area. The greatest need is spiritual. There are some small churches in town but there are no efforts to reach people. The Methodist church, where we held our VBS, has 5 retired ladies attending and the church is very close to death. Our VBS was very successful. We were able to enroll 35 and we saw 6 make professions of faith. Calvary Baptist Church in War, WV has agreed to do follow-up and has committed to help with a church planting effort in Coalwood. Our sincere thanks go to those who went on this mission trip and also to those who prayed, gave money, and helped with other needs as Floyd County Baptists ministered in our Samaria. The purpose of the fair is to get students plugged into local churches. Contact Aaron Werner at awerner@shorter.edu if you would like to be involved or need more information. Notes from the Ministry Center: As I study the life of Jesus, I find one thing abundantly clear. You will not find one person who was ever afraid to draw near to Him. Some mocked Him. Some misunderstood Him. Some were jealous of His power. Others revered Him. But never was there a person who was afraid to approach Him because they thought they might be rejected. How approachable are you? How approachable is your church? We must always make sure that the lost world isn’t afraid to approach us because of the fear of rejection. Open wide your arms today and let the love of Jesus Christ flow from you. Remember how wide He opened His arms to you. My prayer is that our arms are always wide open at the ministry center. Because as the body of Christ, our arms are His arms. “Jesus said, Whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” John 6:37 For Kingdom Work, Brenda Gail
