  1. Mr. Pythagoras

  2. Who was he? • Pythagoras or Πυθαγόρας was a Greek Mathematician and is most famous for his ‘theorem’ (a²+b²=c²) • He was interested in lots of things including: mathematics, music and politics.

  3. Early Life • Born in Samos, Greece • Born 582 B.C. • Was taught by philosophers Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes. • Was drawn away because of the way Polycrates ruled.

  4. Life • His mother was called Pythais and his father, Mnesarchus. • He visited Egypt, Arabia, Babylon, and India. • After his travels, he moved to Italy to escape the government at that time. • Of course, he also discovered his theorem.

  5. Pythagoreanism • Pythagoras founded his own religion • The people were called Pythagoreans • It was based on religious, political, and philosophical beliefs. • They believed in reincarnation: Pythagoras thought himself to have been a Trojan warrior in a past life

  6. Theorem • Pythagoras said that the two shorter sides on a Right-Angled Triangle could be squared and added together to find the longer side. • For Example:

  7. 4cm a²+b²=c² So, first we square 3 & 4 to get 3²=9 4²=16 16+9=25 √25=5 ? Or ‘c’=5 3cm 5cm ?

  8. Interesting Facts • Some think that Pythagoras actually stole his famous formula from the Babylonians(who had stolen it from the Indians) • Discovered square roots by comparing square piles of rock • He was a vegetarian

  9. Pythagoras Thank you for watching!
