  2. Population ageing in India 2nd largest elderly population Nearly 80% live in rural areas Number of older old growing fast Nearly 30% of the elderly live below poverty line > 3 Million affected by dementia

  3. National Policy for Older Persons enacted in 1999 • Encourage individuals to make provision for theirs and spouses' old age • Families to take care • Support voluntary agencies and NGOs to supplement • Provide care and protection • Provide health care • Promote research and training • Create awareness • Nation Council for Older Persons – Under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

  4. National Dementia Strategy • ARDSI is on its way to provide a strategic frame work for dementia care services. • First National Consultative Meeting held in New Delhi on Jan. 30th &31st, 2009. • Plan to organize series of regional meetings in various parts in India • Forum to meet the Health, Social Care professionals, Govt. officials, media etc. • Final meeting at Delhi in December 2009.

  5. Dementia as a Health Priority • Aims to make dementia a health priority • Ministry of Social Justice has approved dementia day care. • ICMR- fund dementia Research • NISD- Dementia Care Training • Govt. of India- National Institute of Ageing

  6. Future: • Setting up a national Office in New Delhi • National Dementia Strategy • Our aim is to get dementia in the National agenda of concerned Ministries. • political support, support of bureaucrats to implement. • Sensitize the Govt. officials • Election round the corner; educate the political parties • Our ultimate aim is to make dementia a health priority.
