  3. Understanding Osteoporosis Osteoporosis, which means "porous bones," is a condition that causes bones to gradually thin and weaken, leaving them susceptible to fractures. About 2 million fracturesoccur each year due to osteoporosis. Although all bones can be affected by the disease, the bones of the spine, hip, and wrist are most likely to break. Experts believe women are more susceptible to osteoporosis because their bones tend to be lighter and less dense and because women's bodies experience hormonal changes after menopause that accelerate the loss of bone mass. 5. How to Prevent? • Regular Health Check up • Eat foods rich in calcium, such as non fat milk, low-fat yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, salmon, tofu, sesame seeds, almonds, and leafy green vegetables. • Stay in the morning sunlight for 15-20 minutes • Do exercises for 30 to 45 minutes at least three times a week. • Do not smoke. Studies have shown that women who smoke increase their risk of developing osteoporosis and related fractures. • Avoid antacids containing aluminium, as they can prevent calcium absorption by binding with phosphorus in the intestines. Some over-the-counter antacids do not contain aluminium and are a good source of calcium.
