  6. Binder Quiz This is worth a quiz grade and like all tests and quizzes, this must be done silently and independently. If you violate this rule, your test will be taken and you will receive a ZERO. This is obviously an open notes quiz but you may only use YOUR binder. As long as you are organized (as was requested), you will do great 

  7. Today’s Agenda

  8. Scientific Literacy Beyond the experiments and into the world of words…

  9. Scientific Literacy • What is it? • Why is it important? • How do we study it in this class? • Why do we devote so much to it? • What’s in it for me?

  10. USA Today • This newspaper, like many others, is a great source for information on current and relevant science news. • Today we will be reading an article about hurricanes and critically analyzing the data and conclusions made using our skills from yesterday.

  11. USA Today Video Introduction • First, we will watch a video comparing the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake to Hurricane Katrina. • Write one of the following questions to reflect on during and after the video: • What are some of the similarities or parallels between the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco and Hurricane Katrina’s devastation of New Orleans? • How long does it take cities to recover from natural disasters, according to the “sociologists of disaster”? • What was San Francisco like before the earthquake? • What’s the “big lesson” of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake for New Orleans?

  12. USA Today Activity You should silently and independently read the article I have provided. Once you are done reading, you can reflect on the questions at the end but DO NOT answer any questions until further instructions are given.

  13. Today’s Agenda

  14. Monthly News Project Overview • Find an article. • Read & respond creatively. • Turn it in on the last day of the month. • This month and December are the only exceptions to this date. • Your article can be from ANY science field. • There will be a couple select months where I will ask you to find a physics-related article. You will be notified of this towards the beginning of the month. • These are worth 10% of your grade.

  15. Picking an article • Use your resources! • My website has links to major newspapers  • USA Today • New York Times • Scientific American • Science Daily • Science Friday • Libraries • Bookstores • I have a small selection of articles for those with no Internet access or anyone interested in the topics I’ve selected.

  16. Monthly News Project Components • A summary of the goal of the article. • A description of three main points that discuss the author’s beliefs towards the topic of interest in the article • The advantages and disadvantages of the topic or study. • What was your opinion of the article? Does this opinion defend the author’s beliefs or disagree with them? • What further scientific questions arise from the article? What is left to find out? • What other areas of science can this study extend to? • If this is a physics-related article, connect it to something we have studied in class.

  17. Rubric I am passing out the rubric I grade from. Like with the grade reports, I will grade your monthly news project directly from my rubric so self-grade yourself before you turn yours in to make sure you are fulfilling all the requirements – I want to see lots of As!
