  2. The Facts • “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was published in a collection of short stories called The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon by Washington Irving • This is the story for which Washington Irving is best known.

  3. Summary of the Story… • Icabod, a school teacher in Sleepy Hollow, tries to win the hand of the beloved Katrina Van Tassel. He believed deeply in witchcraft in sleepy Hollow. • Brom Bones, a neighborhood hero who is handsome and muscular, competes with Icabod to win over Katrina. Brom tends to play practical jokes on people.

  4. Summary Cont’d.. • One night, Icabod was walking home from a party at Katrina’s and found that he was being followed. • It was the headless horseman.

  5. Summary Cont’d… • Icabod tried to escape but the horseman threw his head at him, knocking Icabod off of his horse. • The next day, nothing of Icabod’s was found except for his hat and a smashed pumpkin lying next to it. • Icabod Crane was never seen again.
