  2. Fiction is: • writing which comes from author’s imagination • not necessarily based on fact • It’s Purpose, you ask? • To entertain, of course!

  3. Types of Fiction Realistic Fiction • Fiction that tells about people, places, or events that could happen

  4. Science Fiction • Based on scientific fact that usually takes place in the near or distant future

  5. Historical Fiction • Sets characters against historical backdrop and contains details about this time period

  6. Fantasy • Tells about people / events which are impossible in the real world

  7. Folktale • Story of people or places handed down from past and written down

  8. Fable • Short, simple tale that teaches a moral. • Characters are animals

  9. Myth • Traditional story involving gods, goddesses, & heroes which explain something or tell about a historical event

  10. Biographical Fiction • Tells about a real person with some factual and some fictional material

  11. Legend • Based on history or actual hero • Passed down orally, then written down

  12. Non-Fiction is: • any reading material that is not fiction, based on facts • deals with real events & real people • great deal of information to be understood and remembered It’s Purpose, you ask? • To inform, explain, describe, or persuade

  13. Autobiography • Story about one’s entire life written by themselves

  14. Personal Narrative / Memoir • an account of a few events of a person’s life. • relates an event, incident, or experience to his/her own life • written in 1st person
