Literary criticism gives us a window into a work of literature It gives us a particular way of understanding the text from a specific viewpoint Feminist criticism makes women’s experience, status, and power the center of reading and interpretation Feminist criticism is concerned with "...the ways in which literature (and other cultural productions) reinforce or Undermine the economic, political, social, and psychological oppression of women"

  3. This school of theory looks at how aspects of our culture are inherently patriarchal (male dominated) and this critique strives to expose the explicit and implicit misogyny (hatred of women) Sun Yat Sen Mao Tse Tung

  7. Chinese civilization depicted in Kingston’s story is the epitome of patriarchy, Male-dominated society where women have no rights, legal protection, or status of their own

  8. While biology determines our sex (male or female), culture determines our gender (masculine or feminine). Gender is a social role that we must learn

What does the fact that the grandmother has no name tell us about her status and power in Chinese society? In her Granddaughter’s life?
