  2. Today’s Main Questions… What makes an effective leader? What is the difference between the mindsets of fascism and communism? How does the U.S. government prevent the existence of a dictator in desperate times?

  3. What is a dictator? Someone who has absolute power over a nation without having hereditary (through their family) link. Today we will learn about three influential dictators in Europe during WWII…

  4. Mussolini and Fascism • The first major dictatorship was in Italy in 1919 • Benito Mussolini (“Il Duce”) founded the Fascist Party • Fascism – aggressive nationalism. Fascists believe the nation is always more important than the individual

  5. Stalin and Communism • Began with Vladimir Lenin and Bolshevik Revolution during WWI. • Russia now known as United Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). • Joseph Stalin takes over after Lenin dies in 1924. • Massive industrialization effort • People who resist are killed (8 to 10 million deaths)

Fascism vs. Communism…Don’t confuse the two! • Fascism • One political party with dictator • Very Religious • Use supply and demand, have different salaries • Very hostile to outsiders • Communism • One political party with dictator • Atheists • Economy is all planned out already, everyone is paid the same • Very suspicious of capitalists

  7. Hitler and Nazism (Fascism) • One of first recruits of National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NAZI). • The Nazis were nationalist and anti-communist. • Took power in 1934, began rebuilding German military

  8. Hitler Info • He admired Mussolini and Fascism • He hated the Treaty of Versailles and the German government for accepting it. • Was arrested in 1923, wrote Mein Kampf (“My Struggle”) in prison • Outlined Aryan race and hatred for Jews • Blamed Jews for German defeat in WWI.
