Global • 95% of burns occur in low income countries • Burns are more common in lower socio-economic groups • Fire related burns are the 6th leading cause of death for 5-14 year olds and 8th for 15-29 year olds in low income countries • Burns are one of the few injury mechanisms that have a higher death toll amongst women rather than men • Burns cause not only death but disability and disfigurement

  4. Mulongo is the only burn unit in Uganda • ASF – U is the only set up for acid survivors in Africa • ASF – U has the only pressure garment production unit in Uganda • Serious lack of health care staff who have sufficient burn knowledge and experience • Globally acid burns are the least common of all major causes of burns
