  15. Despised Dreamer 17 years Appointed Prime Minister Imprisoned Falsely Accused Birth of Joseph Slavery in Egypt • Genesis 37:3-11 • Jacob openly favors Joseph • Presents him with a “coat of many colors” • The Hebrew phrase could also mean “long coat with sleeves” • “The coat was long-sleeved, extending to the feet, or a richly ornamented tunic of special color…not suitable for working.” (James Swanson) • Joseph has two dreams that predict his family’s submission • The dreams only serve to reinforce brother’s resentment • Genesis 37:18-28 • Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brother’s welfare • They plot to kill him, but Judah suggests they sell him as a slave • His brothers strip him of his coat and fake his death to Jacob • Jacob lapses into extended period of mourning (25 years)

  18. Mighty Ruler 17 years 11 years?? 2 years?? 30 yrs old Appointed Prime Minister Imprisoned Falsely Accused Birth of Joseph Slavery in Egypt • Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dream (Gen 41:25-36) • Egypt will experience seven years of plenty, then seven years of severe famine • Joseph’s also suggests a plan for surviving the famine • Pharaoh promotes Joseph on the spot to Prime Minister • Joseph is reunited with his brothers and father (Gen 42-46) • His brothers come to buy grain and are recognized as they bow to Joseph • He demands they go back and return with Benjamin, which they do • Joseph reveals his identity as their brother; calls Israel to come live in Goshen • Jacob’s spirit revives at the news that Joseph is alive, and he moves to Egypt • Genesis 50:15-20 • The death of Jacob prompts the brothers to ask Joseph to forgive them again • Joseph weeps as he states his confidence in God’s providence (19,20)

  19. Conclusions God worked to purify Joseph during his time of servitude The time between God’s vision (Joseph’s dream) and it’s fulfillment was many years God’s presence in Joseph’s life made all the difference Joseph was able to forgive freely because he could see God working through the hurts of others to accomplish bigger purposes We see the idea of Romans 8:28 at work, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good, to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purposes.”
