More Explorers • Walter Raleigh-England/financial backer of attempts to colonize NC • Queen Elizabeth I-England/granted Raleigh a Charter to colonize NC • Amadas & Barlowe-England/1st to explore NC • Richard Grenville & Ralph Lane-England/ leaders of 1st Roanoke colony • John White-England/ leader of 2nd Roanoke colony --- “The Lost Colony”

Amadas and Barlowe Expedition • PURPOSE/ a colony to provide wealth for England ( a base for attacking Spanish ships) • Queen Elizabeth I allows Walter Raleigh to take up the charter “to discover and inhabit strange lands” • The job of Amadas and Barlowe was discovering a suitable place for the future colnies

  6. The Ralph Lane Colony • Commanded by Ralph Lane and Richard Grenville/John White was also along • Established on Roanoke Island • Problems: low on food, trouble with the Native Americans and poor leadership • Returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in June of 1586

  7. “The Lost Colony” • John White was Governor of the colony • 117 men, women and children leave Plymouth, England on April 26, 1587 • Virginia Dare was the 1st European child born in the New World
