  1. Capacities and cooperation developed within the project Stefan Åström, IVL

  2. Most important capacities developed • GAINS Europe model advanced user capacity • Performing scenario calculations • Updating input data • Reviewing results developed by IIASA • GAINS Russia model advanced user capacity • Improved regional description of the Russian Federation • Performing scenario calculations • Updating input data • EMEP model emission dispersion capacity • Possibility to perform detailed analysis of air pollution emission dispersion between Russian regions

  3. How can these capacities benefit the Russian Federation? • All members of the CLRTAP benefit from the possibility to perform independent GAINS model analysis and to review data and results from IIASA • The Russian Federation, as a very large country with varying types of air pollution challenges, needs Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM) to help prioritise efforts within the country • Environmental and health benefits can be analysed • Abatement costs can be kept as low as possible • These two reasons above are why Sweden has developed a national IAM capacity

  4. How can the cooperation benefit Sweden and the Russian Federation? • This project has been a door opener for a more active communication between English speaking and Russian speaking parts of Europe in the field of air pollution • The cooperation has been warmly welcomed, and results from Russia are now an important part of the international analysis on air pollution • An increased Russian participation in international work on air pollution will benefit all of Europe and motivate other European countries to increase their efforts
