  6. Matthew Poole 1685 • “I agree with those who think, that God, by the first six seals, intends the whole space from the time when the things written in this book began to be fulfilled unto the time when paganism was rooted out of the Roman Empire, which some make the year 325”.

  8. The first 6 Trumpets Signify a period of around 1465 years from the time of Constantine thru the Christian period of the Roman Empire till its breakup in the French revolution (324 – 1789).

  9. What they understood • Daniel 2 represented the four empires Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome, and that the feet and toes of iron and clay showed that the Roman kingdom would eventually fragment and divide…Most of them also understood that these fragments would ever attempt to recombine to reform the old empire, without success, until the return of Christ.

  14. What they understood • The fourth empire of Daniel 2 was represented as the fourth beast in Daniel 7, was the same beast as the beast of the sea in Revelation 13. The combination of the descriptions of the beasts of Daniel 7 and Revelation 13 (together with Revelation 16 and 17), were understood to be a prophecy of this reconstitution of a new Roman empire comprising Western European nations, with the antiChrist (papal) system as the combining and dominant element.

  25. 1663: Thomas Moore • ‘That an earthquake signifies political commotions and change of affairs, is obvious to any one; but that the city here mentioned should be understood not of a city of brick or stone, but a polity”

  26. 1639: Thomas Goodwin: ‘By the tenth part of the city, I understand some one tenth part of Europe. 1689: Pierre Jurieu: The Tenth part of the City which here fell, will, at some future time, appear to be the Kingdom of France, where a Revolution will take place about the year 1785, and a separation from the Papacy follow,

  27. Peter Jurieu

  28. 1687: Jacques Phillipott • ‘As the King of France did his utmost to enhance the glory of Popery - it will be the King of France who will mostly contribute to her ruin…I take it for granted, first, that the city here mentioned is Babylon - that is the Papal Empire, the Church of Rome, the Empire of the AntiChrist… why should there be any hesitation in concluding that thistenth part of the city which shall fall is France?’

  29. 1742: John Willison • ‘Before Antichrist's fall, one of the ten kingdoms which supported the beast shall undergo a marvelous revolution. Rev.xi.13…by which tenth part is to be understood one of the ten kingdoms into which the great city,Romish Babylon, was divided. This many take to be the kingdom of France, it being the tenth and last of the kingdoms…and also it being the only one of the ten that was never conquered since its rise. However unlikely this, and other prophesied events, may appear at the time, yet the almighty hand of the only wise God can soon bring them about when least expected.’
