  12. Schedule • 8:20-8:45: Morning Work (unpack, spelling & grammar instruction) • 8:45-9:30: Social Studies (M & W), Science (T & Th), & Flex (F) • 9:30-10:10: Special • Mon: Music; Tues: Comp. Lab; Wed: Gym; Thurs: Art; Fri: Library • 10:10-11:00: Writing (working snack) • 11:00-12:20: Math • 12:20-12:50: Whole-group Reading • 12:50-1:50: Lunch & Recess • 1:50-2:50: Reading • 2:50-3:10: Spelling & Grammar • 3:10-3:15: Pack up & Dismissal

  13. Reading • Lead 21 and Comprehension Toolkit • Trade Books • Literature Circles • 25 Book Challenge: similar to 4th grade, but managed on student blogs • Blend of fiction and nonfiction materials

Mathematics • Everyday Mathematics – Spiraling Curriculum • Emphasis on problem solving & communication • Multiple paths to a correct answer • More emphasis on traditional algorithms this year • Accelerated Math Program: • 4th grade report card: at least 2 As and a B (4th MP grade must be an A) • 4th grade end-of-year test: 90% or higher • 4th grade math PSSA: above 1703 • 4th grade teacher recommendation • XtraMath – fact fluency practice • 4 times per week

  15. Language Arts • Being a Writer program • Writer’s Workshop • Focus on Writing Process • Grammar and spelling done as morning work on alternating weeks • Correlates with word structure lessons in reading • Assessed every other Friday • Blogging

Homework Policy • Approximately 50 minutes of homework per night • Reading: 140 minutes of reading per week – log must be signed by an adult on Thursday evening to receive credit; 2 reading strategies per day M-Th • Math: Study Link, Math Boxes, XtraMath (4x per week) • Writing: Occasional blog entries • Science/S.S.: Occasional games on LearnTCI, vocabulary, studying Homework stickers given for missing/incomplete homework More than one missed homework in a month = loss of Hooray for HW Assignments posted daily on 5th grade website
