  1. Engineering at The University of Nottingham Admissions Tutors Mark Sumner and Kathy Simmons

  2. Introduction Why Engineering? Engineering at Nottingham Engineering Departments Entry requirements

  3. What is Engineering? • Application of science to solve practical problems to improve quality of life. • Sustainable energy supply • Protecting water supplies and the environment • Comfortable, low energy homes • Improved infrastructure • Safer transport • Better communications

  4. Why study Engineering? • Good job prospects - many sectors recruiting strongly, e.g. aerospace, energy supply….. • Good salaries (typical starting salaries ~£25,000) • Engineering graduates have excellent transferable skills and many find employment outside engineering. • Opportunities to travel – many large international employers recruit graduates from Nottingham.

  5. Job satisfaction! • Survey of engineers by DTI/Barclays found: • 91% said their jobs were challenging & varied • 88% said they could continue to develop their skills • 85% “opportunities to reach managerial level” • 78% “organisation was progressive & dynamic” • More engineers identified their job with these characteristics than graduates from any other discipline.

  6. Introduction to Faculty of Engineering Departments: Architecture and Built Environment Chemical and Environmental Engineering Civil Engineering Electrical and Electronic Engineering Mechanical Materials and Manufacturing Engineering

  7. Introduction to Faculty of Engineering • UK top five University for engineering research • Faculty with over 100 years engineering expertise • group of exceptional and highly cited academic staff and world-leaders in their fields of research • team committed to inspirational teaching • University with global reach - a network of international campuses • Continual investment in teaching and learning

  8. Introduction to Faculty of Engineering Nottingham Engineering graduates: • have a thorough grounding in their subject of study • are aware of the latest research and developments • have a critical approach to knowledge • can study independently • engage creatively with new and exciting ideas • have the skills and attributes to be successful in employment

  9. Engineering Degree Courses Over 45 degree courses (full time) 3028 UG students (34% international) and 1064 PG students (68% international) MEng (4 year) / BEng (3 year) accreditation from engineering institutions Foundation Year

  10. Department of Architecture and the Built Environment • Architecture (BArch/DiplArch) • Architecture and Environmental Design (MEng) • Architectural Environment Engineering (BEng) • Sustainable Built Environment (BA)

  15. Foundation Year Foundation Year for students without essential A levels (e.g. maths) or other alternative qualifications. Integrated with MEng/BEng degree programmes Students can progress into any engineering degree provided they take correct modules in Foundation Year and achieve 50% at end of year.

  16. Teaching methods • Two semesters • Course and project work assessed throughout the year • Examinations in January and May • Well balanced timetable of: • Lectures  tutorials  lab work  CAD/Computer work  design  project work

  17. Opportunities Industrial placements (Year in Industry) Study abroad opportunities At Nottingham’s Malaysia and China campuses Universitas21 scholarships

  18. Entry Requirements A levels Maths essential for all MEng/BEng degrees also usually require a science (Chemistry for Chemical Engineering, Physics for Mechanical, Civil and Electrical/Electronic Engineering) Offers AAA to BBB depending on subject (Most courses asking for AAA/AAB)

  19. Entry Requirements International Baccalaureate Maths HL/SL for all MEng/BEng degrees Offers 36 points to 30 points + specific requirements in maths/science

  20. Entry Requirements Entry Requirements • BTEC ND/HNC/HND • Advanced Diploma in Engineering • + A level maths/Maths for Engineering • Access to HE Diploma • Generally happy to accept students taking resits. • Welcome students taking a gap year especially Year in Industry. • BTEC ND/HNC/HND • Advanced Diploma in Engineering • + A level maths/Maths for Engineering • Access to HE Diploma • Generally happy to accept students taking resits. • Welcome students taking a gap year especially Year in Industry.

  21. UCAS Application • Key requirement is A level grades • Personal statement • Looking for motivation/interest/experience in engineering. • GCSE grades may be taken into account • If GCSE/AS grades are low and A level predictions are higher – give explanation!
