  1. MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

  2. Introduction Medical Equipment • The World Health Organization (WHO) distinguishes the most often associated terms such as health technology, medical equipment, and medical devices. Therefore, the following definitions are taken into consideration: • Health Technology: The application of organized knowledge and skills in the form of medical devices, drugs, vaccines, procedures, and systems developed to deal with an illness improves quality of life. It is also used interchangeably with healthcare technology. Alem E.

  3. Medical device:An instrument, apparatus, or machine that is used in the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of illness or disease, or for detecting, measuring, restoring, correcting, or modifying the structure or function of the body for some health purpose. • Typically, the hook of a medical gadget is not initiated by pharmacological, immunological, or metabolic routes.

  4. It is intended to affect the structure or individual functions of the human body or other animals, unlike medication, which achieves its intended purposes through chemical processes within the body or other animals, and is not dependent upon being metabolized to achieve any of its intended purposes. Though FMHACA used the term Medical Instrument instead of Medical Device, the content of this definition is in line with what is discussed above.

  5. Medical equipment: Medical equipment requiring calibration, repair, user training, and decommissioning is usually managed by clinical engineers. • Medical equipment is used for the specific purposes of diagnosis and treatment of disease or rehabilitation following disease or injury; it can be used either alone or in combination with any accessory, consumable, or other piece of medical equipment. • Medical equipment excludes implantable, disposable or single-use medical devices.

  6. Concepts of “Essential Devices” • The concept of Essential Devices is quite similar to that of Essential Medicines. It advocates a selection of essential devices throughout the entire population that take on the largest health care need. This should lead to better care, better drug use management, and lower expenses. In the same manner, the use of a medical appliance should be carefully considered. Alem E.

  7. Its function meets the needs of health-care services. • Proven to be cost-effective. • Evidence-based (i.e. based on knowledge, data, principles, and procedures that have been determined by experts but that adhere to established specifications).

  8. The following factors must be considered in the planning: • Medical equipment is used to provide specialized health care services. • All the equipment necessary must be identified and tuned up, including training and servicing of staff, physical facilities and auxiliary supplies, such as water, electricity, air-conditioning, safety and protection.

  9. Spare parts and accessories must be determined from the nearby agent. • Supplier should offer both operation and service manuals. • In evaluating tenders, bids have to be compared and evaluated, not only in terms of cost and delivered time, but also in terms of the availability of spare parts, technical support, and quality of service. Moreover, the need to standardize must be taken into account when making tenders to facilitate their usage and maintenance.

  10. Classification of Medical Equipment • Diagnostic equipment:- Medical Imaging Machinery is an apparatus that helps physicians diagnose diseases. Examples: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scanners, and X-ray machines. Diagnostic Medical Equipment may also be used at home for certain purposes, such as the management of diabetes. • Therapeutic equipment:- Infusion pumps and Medical lasers are included. Alem E.
