  3. Hints for a Successful Presentation • Plan carefully • Do your research! • Time your presentation • Practice, practice, practice • Speak comfortably and clearly • Avoid “likes”, “ums”, etc. • Speak loudly!

  4. Effective PowerPoint Slides • Use design templates • Standardize the positioning of your text, colors and styles • Limit information to essentials • CITE all of your resources

  5. Text Guidelines • Generally no more than 6 words per line • Avoid long sentences/paragraphs • Large font = important information • Texts need to contrast background

  6. Clip Art/Graphics • Should balance the slide • Show enhance the presentation • NOT overwhelm the audience

  7. The Paper… • Most of your problems were here! 

  8. Mechanics • Spell check! • Get a 2nd or 3rd reader to proof • Avoid phrases such as: • “As I said before..” • “most major” • “things” and “stuff” • Review past and present tenses

  9. Neatness • MLA and APA both have different styles for scientific research papers • Look them up! Follow them! • Cite within your paper • You HAVE to cite your material whether it is a direct quote or not!

Citations within the Paper • If you are paraphrasing an idea from another work, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication in your in-text reference • According to Jones (1998), APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners. • APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners (Jones, 1998).

Extra Credit Opportunity (+8) • Re-write the chapter paper • Include: • Necessary grammatical and spelling error corrections • In-paper citations! • Check out MLA and APA in-text citations online! • This does INVOLVE going through your research and citing where you got each piece of information • DUE Wednesday, September 12!

  15. Don’t Freak out! • Its too early to freak out about your grades just yet….don’t worry too much about this project grade • You will have multiple opportunities to show improvement • Do the extra credit opportunity (this will be the only time its provided)

  16. Grading NO Extra Credit • A=0 • B=2 • C=1 • D=5 WITH Extra Credit A=2 B=2 C=5 D=0
