Important Dates & Information • Summer Reading • (Requirement, Location, Subjects, Timeline) • Registration: Tuesday, August 7th, 2012 (schedules, lockers, fees, sign ups, health forms, class photos) • Transition day new students: August 13th • First day of school K-12: August 14th • Secondary Back to School Night: September 6th , 2012

  4. Assessments • If your child has not yet taken assessments please contact the main counseling office at 303-453-4781. You will need an appointment with a counselor.

  5. Agenda • Teacher selected and student chosen requirements in MS • Suggestions for MS students and parents • HS credits for MS students • Curriculum pathways • Questions for individual teachers and/or counselors

  6. Middle School requirements • 5 Core classes: World Language (Spanish, French or Mandarin) English, Science, Social Studies and Math • 2 Elective classes each semester (7 periods per day) • One semester of health (7th grade)

  7. Suggestions for Middle School Students • Do take a study hall • Do remember that “standard” classes at Peak to Peak are rigorous • Do balance class work & extra-curricular • Do review your study skills (6th grade induction) • Do use a timer for homework: limit 20 minutes (30 minutes for honors) • Do study at desk or table, NOT on bed • Do turn off TV, phones etc. • Do use your planner, locker • Do ask your teachers for help, do use office hours if needed

  8. Suggestions for Middle School Parents • Do help your child with time limits on homework • Do have your child print out weekly homework assignments Monday nights and web grades as available • Do know who your child’s counselor is and contact as needed • Do help your child learn responsibility (planner, bringing homework to class, supplies) • Do talk to your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns • Do read Speak to Peak Newsletter, emails, • Volunteer! • Do make sure your child attends regularly • Do come to Back to School Night; parent/teacher/student conferences

  9. HS Credits • If MS students are recommended to be placed in certain HS classes, they have option to choose to have this class count on HS transcript. • Once decided, can’t change this. • Does count for HS GPA.

  10. World Languages • All 6th graders and new 7th/8th select Spanish 1A, French 1A or Mandarin 1A • 6th: Level 1A • 7th: Level 1B • 8th: Level 2

  11. English • Please notify a counselor if you do not have an English Recommendation • 6th: Power Reading, English 1, English 1 Honors, English 2 Honors • 7th: English 2, English 2 Honors • 8th: English 3, English 3 Honors, English 4 Honors

  12. Social Studies • 6th: American History • 7th: World History I • 8th: World History II Standard/Honors

  13. Science • Please refer to the student’s Math placement when choosing a Science class • 6th: Life Science, Life Science Honors • 7th: Earth Science, Earth Science Honors • 8th: Physical Science, Physical Science Honors

  14. Mathematics • Please notify a counselor if you do not have a Math Recommendation • Do pace yourself- placement here affects HS (Demonstration) • Pre-Algebra, Pre- Algebra Honors • Algebra 1A/ Honors • Algebra 1B/ Honors • Algebra Honors • Proof Geometry Honors • Algebra 2/Trig. Honors

Band and Orchestra • During School Hours: (except Jazz band) • General Band (full year) • Intermediate Band (full year- gen. band or audition) • Concert Band (full year- audition) • Wind Symphony (full year-audition) • Jazz Band (enrolled in another music class- before school) • General Orchestra (full year) • Concert Orchestra (full year-audition) • Chamber Orchestra (full year-audition)

  17. Choir • General Choir (one semester) • Concert Choir (full year-previous experience) • Phoenix Fire (full year- audition)

All auditions should be completed by now. If your child has not completed an audition please contact the appropriate teacher above.

  19. Physical Education - Available for one or both semesters each year.

  20. Health & Study Hall Health: one semester in 7th required Study Hall: optional but recommended Power Reading: Optional 6th grade class for those looking for a fluency boost.

  21. Arts • Reminder: 4 classes of art required in High School • Theatre (semester) • Exploratory Art (semester) • Mixed Media Approaches (semester- Exp. Art pre-req.)

  22. Technology • MS Technology (8th grade only)
