  28. Literacy – across the curriculum

  29. Common Core Connection • What are the Literacy Standards? Standards for reading and writing in • Science • Social Studies • History • Other Technical Subjects*

  30. Range and content of student reading • To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts. • Through extensive reading of stories, dramas, poems, and myths from diverse cultures and different time periods, students gain literary and cultural knowledge as well as familiarity with various text structures and elements. • By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students build a foundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the background to be better readers in all content areas. • Students can only gain this foundation when the curriculum is intentionally and coherently structured to develop rich content knowledge within and across grades. • Students also acquire the habits of reading independently and closely, which are essential to their future success. Common Core State Standards, College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading, p.10

  31. To what grade levels do the Literacy Standards apply? Grades 6 - 12 Why not grades K – 5? The Literacy Standards are predicated on the assumption that K-5 teachers already teach reading and writing across content areas. Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar, 2-12-12.

  32. An Integrated Model of Literacy “We acquire knowledge and thinking skills best when we learn them reciprocally, when we are asked to read, write, argue, and problem solve as we engage with text and with an organized body of essential knowledge”  Mike Schmoker Focus: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning ASCD 2011 Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar, 2-12-12.

  33. Organization of the Literacy Standards Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar, 2-12-12.

  34. Three Big Ideas • Literacy is everyone’s job. 2. Students must read complex texts independently and proficiently in every discipline. 3. Students must write argumentative and explanatory texts in every discipline (process writing and on-demand writing). Barnhart, Marcia, INFOhio Common Core ELA and Literacy Standards webinar, 2-12-12.

  35. Want to learn more? • Watch the webinar by Marcia Barnhart. • Join the KBC and discuss online with other Ohio educators.
