  3. Data Backup Data backup is a proactive approach that maintains the safety of data and is the easiest and the most effective way to avoid loss of data. Data backup involves maintaining and storing at least one additional copy of the most updated version of one’s data to ensure its availability at all times. Data or work that isn’t easy to replace and is important for one’s business, should be backed up. Such data can include databases (for financial data), spreadsheets, customers’ data, word processing documents, etc. Backups are meant for recovering deleted or corrupted data as well as for recovering copies of older files. Hence, backups are tools for disaster recovery. To ensure the effectiveness of data backup, this process should be automated and should be carried out regularly. Moreover, the copies should be saved on different mediums. To digress, the data of websites are stored on the servers of web hosting companies and delivered from there, over the Internet, to make websites accessible. Most of the professional web hosting service providers provide data backup facility to ensure the safety of their clients’ websites’ data. The most efficient web hosting companies are usually referred to as the “Best Website Hosting Company”, the “Best Cloud Hosting Company”, the “Best Windows Hosting Company” etc.

  4. Data Backup Plan There needs to be an efficient data backup plan for the success of any data backup process. Any effective data backup plan will take into account the following- • The types of data that need to have a backup • The compression methods that should be used • The frequency and the types of backups • The type of medium for storing backups • The storage facility involved in storing the data safely

  5. Data Backup Strategy A data backup strategy must include the following- • Onsite Backups- Such backups are faster to restore. • Offsite Backups- This type of backup maintains copies of backups offsite. Such a backup can be accessed either manually or through the cloud. • Optimized Backup Schedule- Any effective data backup process should be regular and should be carried out as per an organized schedule. • Backup Testing- Backups need to be tested regularly. IT staff should be adequately trained to access and restore data backups quickly. • Organized Storage System- The storage repository for backups should be organized. As per the 3-2-1 backup strategy, at least 3 copies should be maintained of data. 2 different types of storages should be used for data backup. Additionally, at least 1 copy of the data must be maintained offsite.

  6. Main Types of Data Backups • The main types of data backups are full backup, incremental backup, differential backup and mirror backup. Each of these is discussed in the next few slides.

  8. Full Backup • In full backup every file in a system which is important for the business is copied. It is not only the first copy of the data but also is the most reliable copy. It is usually time consuming and requires comparatively more space than other types of backups. Its advantage is that it renders the process of restoring data extremely fast.

  9. Incremental Backup • In this type of backup, the initial backup is a full one. The successive backups store the changes that were initiated after the previous backup. The process of restoring lost data is longer in it but the backup happens more swiftly.

  10. Differential Backup • It is similar to an incremental backup as in it too the initial backup is full and the successive ones only store the changes that have been made since the last backup. More storage space is needed in it than in an incremental backup. The restoration happens more speedily in it.

  11. Differential Backup • It is similar to an incremental backup as in it too the initial backup is full and the successive ones only store the changes that have been made since the last backup. More storage space is needed in it than in an incremental backup. The restoration happens more speedily in it.
