  2. Background Information Chief Joseph’s name meant Thunder Rolling Down the Mountains. His tribe that he was from is the Nez Perce tribe. He was born in 1840 and died in 1904. He lived to be 64 years old.

  3. Early Life In 1840 Chief Joseph the Second was born in the Wallowa Valley. He was known as Young Joseph because his father, Chief Joseph the First, had the same baptized name.

  4. Later Life When Chief Joseph was 33, the Nez Perce tribe got sent to a reservation which is now known as the state of Oklahoma. Chief Joseph later died of broken heart.

  5. Interesting Information Chief Joseph was kept captive, never being allowed to return to his Nez Perce Homeland, even though General Miles promised he could live in Idaho. Chief Joseph’s daughter was named Jean-Louise.
