  2. SHANG • Built first cities • Built royal capital of Anyang • Built palaces, temples, public buildings, homes for officials, workshops and homes • King controlled political, religious and military • Controlled northern China and Huang He valley • Kings had warlords govern territories

  3. Shang continued • King • Aristocrats, warlords and other lords • Farmer (most), slaves, merchants, artisans • Farmers- cattle, sheep, chickens, millet, wheat, rice • Religion - polytheistic • Kings consulted ancestors for wisdom, oracle bones

  8. Zhou Dynasty • Longest dynasty (800 years) • Wu Wang overthrew Shang gov’t • Ruled like the Shang, aristocrats passed position to son • Believed king represented them before the gods • Right to rule was by the Mandate of Heaven, by Dao • Developed irrigation

  9. Zhou Dynasty -cont’ • Period of Warring States- fought for power, forced farmers to be soldiers • Warfare - horses, swords, spears, crossbows, saddle, stirrup

  10. Qin Dynasty • Sent cavalry to defeat the Zhou • Ruler - Qin Shi huangdi - 1st emperor • Appointed governors--not inherited • Harsh rule - obey or be punished or killed • Burned writings • Censors kept an eye on everyone • Created currency (money)

  11. Qin Dynasty • Built tomb with terra cotta soldiers (belief in the afterlife)

  13. Han Dynasty • 202 BC Liu Bang, founder, came into power • Han Wudi- didn’t like hereditary-started civil service • Han Wudi started schools so people could pass the test to earn jobs • Tenant farmers

  14. Han Dynasty • Added new territories • Culture- art, painters, sculptors • Water wheels • Acupuncture
