  1. WHAT A MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE POLICY CAN DO FOR YOU Medical supplement insurance, commonly called Medigap, supplements an individual's Medicare coverage and is available when you need it most, whether you require help with high deductibles, medications or have a family history of severe illness.

  2. Medicare, the government-provided health insurance for seniors in the United States, is intended to cover 80 percent of the insured's healthcare expenditures. That remaining 20%, which includes deductibles, coinsurance, copays, and other out-of-pocket spending, may quickly stack up and put a burden on what may be a limited income. Medicare Supplement insurance, which is available from private insurers, can alleviate the burden of some of these healthcare expenditures. Medical supplement insurance, commonly called Medigap, supplements an individual's Medicare coverage and is available when you need it most, whether you require help with high deductibles, medications or have a family history of severe illness.

  3. Before enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan, you should think about the following: • Is the price of a Medicare Supplement plan less than what you would expect to spend out-of-pocket if you did not have one? • Would any of the Medicare Supplement plans available right now be helpful to you? • How frequently do you plan to see a doctor? Do you require coverage that includes durable medical equipment, or do you anticipate spending time in a hospital or skilled care facility? • Is your health in excellent shape? Has your health condition lately changed? Do you believe you may require more medical attention today than you did previously? • What medical expenditures are you currently paying for that Medicare does not cover? Calculate this by combining your deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

  4. Remember that medical insurance supplement plans are not stand-alone health insurance plans; they work in conjunction with your existing Medicare policy and are regulated to include the same Medicare-approved care across insurers. Because they are aware, individuals may pick their insurance provider based on service and pricing. Individuals are also not limited to a particular network and can proceed to see the same doctors and experts they have always seen.

  5. The optimum time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement insurance coverage is during your first open enrollment period, which begins the month you reach the age of 65 and register in Medicare Part B Medical Insurance. Supplemental health insurance policies can provide you and your family with peace of mind in knowing that you are protected for your specific health and financial requirements and do not have to go into debt to pay for healthcare expenditures not covered by Medicare.
