  12. Intro to IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet).

  13. What is IPA? • A series of symbols representing sounds that are spoken and/or sung, and rules for speaking and singing.

  14. Singing the “R” sound. • There are three rules we as singers should follow to improve our sound when singing. • 1) Always sing “R” before a vowel sound. example: The Tree. • 2) Never sing “R” before a consonant sound. replace the “R” with a “ə” (neutral vowel sound) example: Bird becomes Biəd. • 3) Never sing “R” before a rest or pause. again, replace the “R” with a “ə” (neutral vowel sound) example: “I’m Here,” becomes “I’m Heə,”

  15. Vowel Sounds • The purest sound of a word. • Singers should hold on to the pure vowel sound for as long as the music will allow to produce their best tone quality. • Diphthongs and Triphthongs. • Diphthongs are a TWO vowel sounds that glide together in a word. • Triphthongs are THREE vowel sounds that glide together in one word. • In a Diphthong and Triphthong, the singer should stay on the first pure Vowel sound and grind, or complete, the word and the very last second. DO NOT grind the to early.

  16. Consonant Sounds • Very Important when it comes to Articulation and Projection. • The difference in Voiced and Voiceless consonant sounds.
