  5. Our Requirements at FSO • Start with the users and their needs: Find and help to understand statistics (in context). • An electronic publication should: • 1provide a coherent story (book paradigm) or a collection of separate stories (magazine paradigm). • 2 be able to use all presentation forms that are electronically available. 7. Our Choice at FSO • In our search for a form that fulfils the requirements, we selected .folio, an open format, part ofAdobe‘s Digital Publishing Suite DPS.

  8. .folio • How didthisformat come about? • Condé Nast is looking for channels for electronic publications. In-house costs unsustainable. • Having Adobe as a partner creates a standard: the Digital Publishing Suite DPS with .folio Known examples: The New Yorker, Wired, The Economist: Intelligent Life, “The .folio file format has become the de facto standard for highly interactive digital publications. Because of the fast growth of the digital publishing industry, and the increase in marketplaces that want to leverage .folio, Adobe believes that the industry is better served through the licensing of the .folio specification.” (http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/2013/12/readership-metrics-open-folio-format.htm l)

  9. .folio? • .folio: • Standardised navigation philosophy • Wide range of presentation possibilities • Integration of internet content • Publication in the major stores • Production based on layout programs, editing systems or web content management systems • Open format (ZIP archive with PDF, HTML, XML).

  15. Looking Ahead • .folio Standard guarantees that further developments are carried out by the manufacturer. Easing of burden on users. • Stay open to other forms, special applications for special presentation forms.e.g. at the FSO: Stat@las Chronostat

  16. The be-all and end-all Electronic publication offers everything needed to make a story appealing. • Challenge: Rethink publication! • Authors and also publication specialists (layout designers, visualisers (storyboard artists), publishers) are challenged • in terms of concept with regard to the content that is to be communicated and • in terms of the presentation due to the possibilities that the medium is opening up. • New ways of working, processes and also changing job descriptions are the result and necessary.
