  1. RI3/RL3 Summarizing Be Concise, Be Clear

  2. The Target • I can write all the elements of a 3 while using 3+ rhetorical verbs. • I can write a concise summary giving identifying information, the claim/theme, and supporting details/quotes in an organized manner, using transitions and following the structure of the original text. • I can write a summary answering who, what, when, where, and why. • I can write a summary with too little or too much information.

  3. Breaking It Down • Identifying Information = author, title of work, year of publication (aka citation) • Give claims/themes and details in order of appearance in the text • Glue it all together with rhetorical verbs

Example We Wear the Mask By Paul Laurence Dunbar, 1896 We wear the mask that grins and lies, It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,— This debt we pay to human guile; With torn and bleeding hearts we smile, And mouth with myriad subtleties. Why should the world be over-wise, In counting all our tears and sighs? Nay, let them only see us, while        We wear the mask. We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries To thee from tortured souls arise. We sing, but oh the clay is vile Beneath our feet, and long the mile; But let the world dream otherwise,        We wear the mask! Summary:
