  2. What do you already know?? • Cities • Tracy, California • Seattle Washington • Dates • October 6, 2009 • December 25 2009

  3. Concept • Commas are used to separate items in a list of THREE or more things • Candy, ice cream, and cookies • The final comma is placed before the conjunction: and, or, but • I like to eat pizza, salad,and pasta.

  4. Examples • I like to read mysteries, fairytales, and poems in class.  • My favorite candy to eat is snickers, skittles,and starburst.  • My cat has eyes a nose and a tail.  • For recess today I played on the swings with the tetherball and basketball. 

  5. Why It’s Important!!! • Help us to become better writers because we will know where commas need to go. • Help us to be better readers because we know where to pause. • We will see comma questions on the CST’s.

  6. Skill- How to place commas • 1. Read the sentence • 2. Find the list of items • Insert commas between the items

  7. Model • I had juice toast and bacon for breakfast. • I had juice, toast, and bacon for breakfast. • We stayed with grandma on Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday nights. • We stayed with grandma on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

  8. Practice • I saw a zebra giraffe and lion at the zoo • I saw a zebra, giraffe, and lion at the zoo.

  9. Practice • What do you like on your pizza cheese pepperoni mushrooms or olives? • What do you like on your pizza cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, or olives?

  10. Closure • What was the objective of today’s lesson? • In this sentence how do we place commas within it? • We are going to do math science and reading in class today. • Why is it important to learn about commas in a sentence?
