  1. October 9, 2014 - Stargirl chapters 19 and 20 making inferences Homework: Bring your copy of Stargirl for tomorrow's class. Vocab quiz on Monday - chapters 13-22 Test corrections due tomorrow! Objective I can use inferencing skills to evaluate plot events in Stargirl. Warm Up: What does it mean to draw conclusions / make inferences? Look up the definition of INFERENCE in the BLUE SECTION of your Literature book and copy the definition into your notes. Think back to the Porcupine Necktie chapter. What inference did we already make regarding this gift? How did we come to that conclusion? Use textual evidence to support your answer.

  2. inference a logical guess that is made based on facts and one's own knowledge and experience http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acZzllpIYz4 http://mcdn1.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Inference-Poster-Reading-Strategy/original-234170-1.jpg

  3. I think... because... http://www.elizabethroseblogs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Thinking.jpg

  4. Quick review of nouns What are 4 types that we learned about yesterday? Come up with an example from Stargirl for each one 1. 2. 3. 4.

  5. So now you will work in your groups of 4 to play a matching game. Each group will get a bag with 32 cards in it. First lay out numbers 1-16. Read each scenario, and match it up with the appropriate inference. #s1-16 are the scenarios #s 17-32 are the matches then think of the inference you can make one you match them up. http://theteachingtomtom.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/group.jpg

  6. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

  7. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16.

  8. Leo realizes that he and Stargirl are getting the silent treatment Stargirl takes Leo to her "enchanted" place and teaches him how to meditate

  9. Warm up: Copy the following questions and vocabulary words into your notes Chapters 19 and 20 1. What question did Senor Saguaro "ask" Leo? Make an inference - Why does he not want to answer it? 2. What did Stargirl teach Leo? 3. What was unusual about Stargirl's giving? shunning (100) persisted (101) rapture (107) revel (107)

  10. shunning (100) persisted (101) rapture (107) revel (107) 1. "The Amish in Pennsylvania have a word for it." "Shunning." The shunnee, so to speak, has gotten himself in dutch with the church, so he's excommunicated. The whole community is in on it. Unless he repents, nobody speaks to him for the rest of his life. Not even his family. 2. The question that came to my mind then sounded silly, but it persisted: "Do you believe in enchanted places?" 3. We listened in rapture, and so, I half believed, did the tumbleweed and cacti, the desert, the mountains, all listening to the girl in the longfalling skirt. 4. She taught me to revel. She taught me to wonder. She taught me to laugh.
