  3. Vocabulary • ratio – a comparison of two numbers by division (simplest form) • rate – a ratio of two measurements having different units • unit rate – a rate with a denominator of 1

  4. Pulse Activity • work in pairs • take each other’s pulse • explain how a pulse is a ratio • number of beats per minute • write the pulse in simplest form • other activities?? school hours??

  5. Write Ratios in Simplest Form • can be written 3 ways • simplify • measurements – both quantities must have same unit of measure

  6. Write Ratios in Simplest Form • 35 wins to 42 losses • 12 blue marbles out of 18 marbles. • 10 inches to 2 feet

  8. Find Unit Rate • different types of units • denominator is ALWAYS 1 • example: $4.00 per hour means the same as $4.00 per 1 hour or

  9. Find Unit Rates • Express 309 miles in 6 hours as a unit rate. • Express 141 pages in 3 hours as a unit rate.

  10. Find Unit Rates • 12 waves in 2 hours • $12 for 4.8 pounds

  11. Compare • Alex spends $12.50 for 2 pounds of almonds and $23.85 for 5 pounds of jelly beans. Which item costs less per pound? By how much?
