  1. EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY What is Technology? Textbook says, “The generation of knowledge and processes to develop systems that solve problems and extend human capabilities.” B. I say, “All the stuff we make that makes our lives easier.” C. Technology solves problems and helps us do new things D. Examples: -- Refrigerators keep food cold -- Scuba gear to explore the ocean

  2. 2. History of Technology A. As long as the human race has been around B. Examples: -- Stone Age (10,000 BCE): used natural materials such as stone, wood, and bone to make tools and weapons -- Bronze Age (3000 BCE): learned how to make bronze out of copper & tin, led to the development of better tools and weapons -- Iron Age (1200 BCE): learned how to mine and use iron, further developed their tools and weapons -- Land use & farming led to waterwheel, plows, carts, etc… 3. What makes technology change? A. Info. & knowledge B. How we communicate -- Word of mouth -- Printing press – written word -- Radio & T.V. -- Internet

  3. C. Human desire & human need -- Evident needs (medical) -- Created “wants” (cell phones, electronics) -- Needs driven by culture and geography -- hot climate technologies vs. cold climate technologies -- Technology driven by good intentions -- Technology driven by evil intentions D. All technology impacts three things: -- Society -- Environment -- Economy

  4. 4. Emerging Technologies A. “New” technologies -- Cell phones & how they have changed our lives -- Cloning -- Embryonic stem-cell research -- MP3 players & their effect on the music industry -- The Internet B. Rapidly developing technology – good or bad? -- Poor people & poor nations – adaptation? -- Older generations -- adaptation?

  5. Using Technology 1. The are five (5) areas in life where technology is used to solve problems and extend capabilities: 1.1. Communication Technology – the process of sending and receiving messages (Radio; Television; Telephones; Computers; Internet & E-Mail) 1.1.2. Communication technology isn’t always people to people – it can be machine to machine 1.2. Manufacturing Technology – technologies people use to make the things they want and need; includes the equipment and machines used to change the raw materials into finished products . Examples: Oil Refinery (oil & gasoline); Wood Mill & woodworking shop

  6. 1.3 Construction Technology – all the technology used in designing and building structures (hammers; Bulldozers; AutoCAD vs. blueprints; Mud to wood to concrete to steel, underground, above ground, high-rises) 1.4. Transportation Technology – all the means we use to help us move through the air, in water, or over land (Planes; Boats; cars; Trains; elevators; escalators)

  7. 1.5. Bio-related Technology – all the technology connected with plant and animal life (Medical Technologies; x-rays, MRI’s; machinery that plows, sows, and harvests our food; canning, drying, freezing, and curing foods to preserve them; Genetic Engineering; DNA Research; Stem-cell Research; the use of engineered bacteria to eat pests instead of the use of pesticides)

  8. 1.6. Combined Technology Technologies blend and work together. -- Airplanes -- transportation (move people) -- communication (pilot communicates ATC and other aircraft; aircraft communicates with the pilot) -- Manufacturing (most parts preassembled and come from several different manufacturers before the final assembly is done) -- Construction (build airports; manufacturing facilities; runways; hangars) -- Bio-related technology (in-flight meals processed & preserved by bio-technological methods)

  9. Technology and Human Knowledge 1. All the subjects you study in school are related to technology; they affect technology, technology affects them. 2. Technology and Science: Scientists spend their time doing research and making discoveries (an observation of something in the world that has never been made before). Newton’s Law of Gravity: Newton was the first to notice that things fell in a certain way, at a certain speed, and that these patterns and speeds were predictable. Technologist use scientific research & discoveries to make better technologies (AE’s use scientific discoveries regarding gravity to develop better aircraft engines and aircraft structural designs that “defy” the laws of gravity.)

  10. Scientists benefit from the development of technologies (electron microscope in 1931 radically changed science; allowed scientists to see and study things that had previously been invisible. 3. Technology and Mathematics: Almost every aspect of technology is related to and affected by mathematics (Load-bearing formulas used to calculate how much weight a structure can hold or withstand; Mathematical formulas used to develop tolerances in machines, aircraft, and other equipment are very crucial in manufacturing.) 4. Technology and Language Arts: Technology requires transfer of info. between two people, between two companies, between two cultures, etc…

  11. Without language, companies would have no way to inform potential customers of their product Without clear channels of communication, any technological process would either be significantly hindered or would grind to a halt (Suez canal). 5. Technology and Social Studies: 5.1. Social studies (especially psychology) help us understand the impact technology has on society, whether for good or for bad (face transplant). Technology Assessment Analysis of a certain technology that has been implemented; assess the good and bad byproducts of that technology. A problem solved sometimes creates 2 new problems
