  1. Gulfstream G550:Air Conditioning and Pressurization • Jordan Berk • Kevin Cooney

  2. Overview • Gulfstream G550 • G550 air conditioning and pressurization • 737NG Comparison • Quiz

  3. Gulfstream G550 • Long-range cruise speed: M.80 • Range at long range cruise speed: 6,750nm • Washington D.C to Dubai • 2 Rolls-Royce BR710 Turbofan Engines Washington, D.C., with Dubai, London with Singapore

  4. G550 Air Conditioning and Pressurization • Provides pressurized and temperature controlled airflow • Source of equipment cooling • Air conditioning operational subsystems: • Airflow and Temperature Control • Pressurization Control

  5. G550 Air Conditioning and Pressurization • Maintains air density to 51,000’ (highest operating altitude) • High pressure air regulates ambient pressure • 5th and/or 8th stage engine compressor bleed air

  6. Airflow and Temperature Control • Air Conditioning Packs (ACPs) • Modifies bleed air from engines or auxiliary power unit (APU) • APU used on ground before engine start • APU can support air conditioning packs support for takeoff (up to 1,500’)

  7. Supply Ducts • Cockpit, Forward and Aft cabin supply duct • Divided to supply each side of aircraft • Divided to supply pilot and copilot sides • Connected via trim air valves • Modulates amount of hot air

  8. Equipment Cooling • Cabin and cockpit air conditioned air • Ducting and fans move airflow in desired direction • Fans are installed in: • Left, Right, Aft Electronic Equipment Racks • Passenger Service Units • Display Units (DUs)

  9. Pressurization Control • Maintain density for breathing without supplemental oxygen • Sea level pressure to 31,000’ • 10.28 psi: differential pressure limit • Regulating escape of conditioned air

  10. TROV • Thrust Recovery Outflow Valve (TROV) • Releases conditioned air • Cabin Pressure Controller (CPC) • 1 of 3 electrical actuators

  11. Depressurizing • Cabin Pressure Relief Valve (CPRV) • Opens to relieve overpressure • Opens to prevent negative pressure • Smoke removal valve • Depressurizes baggage compartment

  12. G550 and B737NG • APU or engines • 5th or 8th stage compressor • TROV • 51,000’ G550 • APU, engines, external ground cart • 5th or 9th stage compressor • Butterfly Valve • 41,000’ B737NG

  13. QUIZ Q: What is the highest operating altitude? A: 51,000’

  14. QUIZ Q: When can the APU be used for air conditioning? A: On the ground before engine start or during takeoff

  15. QUIZ Q: What is the differential pressure limit? A:10.28 psi
