  5. Energy/Resources France Geothermal Energy: Used for heating, energy production Not Much of This in Europe. Must trade for it!

  6. History World War I caused much hardship in Europe. The victors forced losers to pay huge sums in reparations to pay for the war. The 1920s were terrible in places like Germany. In addition, the Great Depression came right after this. Economic conditions were very poor. The public in these countries were likely to support any leaders that could generate a sense of purpose, a glimmer of hope, a reason to feel proud. Nazis in Germany, and Fascists in Italy and Spain benefited by the dire conditions and gained power.

  7. More History Industrial Revolution: Began in the early 1800s in England. People moved to cities and began using water and steam (generated by Coal) to power factories (moved to secondary economic activities). Fewer people on the farm. More urbanization. So what did they make in the early years? Textiles, Iron and Steel, Shipping

  8. European Union Reason: To generate economic cooperation among participating countries. Increasing trading partners. Like NAFTA in North America How: Reducing tax/tariffs between countries, the Euro (common currency) Supranational Cooperation – Example: The European Union Interdependence – Countries work together to solve problems/trade Countries agree to put the goals of the Union ahead of their own interests. They have to abide by the decisions of the EU even if they don’t like it. Today’s Example: Greece/Portugal bailouts

  11. More Geography Catholics vs. Protestants England’s invasion of Ireland caused protestants to move to Northern Ireland. When Ireland regained its independence, N. Ireland stayed with Great Britain. Straight of Gibraltar The narrow body of water between Europe and Africa – Strategic value, controls access to the Mediterranean Sea.
