Denmark • Constitutional monarchy with a parliament • Part of the European Union, but not part of the Euro. • The Danish currency is called the Krone and $1=DKK.5.72. • Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid or Queen Margrethe II • She has been queen since 1972. • National flag is red with a white cross and called the Dannebrog

  6. Greenland Greenland is an autonomous country in the Kingdom of Denmark. It has its own laws and rulers, but depends on Denmark for certain things (foreign affairs and defense).

  7. Greenland • It is the world’s largest island that isn’t a continent. • Geologists have discovered it is actually three different islands connected by ice bridges and glaciers. • A glacier is a large sheet or mountain of ice.

Greenland • The towns are all on the ice-free coasts, mostly on the west coast. • In 2007, a new island was revealed when part of a glacier melted. • There are no roads between towns because of the fjords, or long narrow valleys filled with water cut by glaciers. • Ferry boats take people from town to town. • The capital city is Nuuk.

  9. Greenland • The native people of Greenland are called, Kalaallit or Greenlander Inuit. • They speak their own language called Kalaallisut or Greenlandic.

Vikings • Traveled between the 8th and 11th centuries around Europe. • Were known as warriors, raiders, pirates, traders and craftsmen. • Traveled in boats called longships. • Might have invaded the island of Iona off the coast of Scotland, causing the monks to flee with the Book of Kells unfinished.

  11. Resources • Amber formed from the sap of a now extinct fir tree. • It settled into the floor of the ocean, which is now the land of Denmark. • Denmark has amber in its seas as well as in its land. • It is known as a healing stone.

  12. Famous Danes • Hans Christian Andersen wrote fairy tales: “The Ugly Duckling” • Niels Bohr: Danish physicist who introduced the Bohr Model of the atom • Bohr won the Nobel Peace Prize in Physics in 1922.
