  1. Oceanic Jeopardy!

  2. Oceanic Jeopardy!

  3. What is the structure of Water?

  4. H2O, two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen.

  5. Hydrogen and Oxygen give Water a polar nature. How?

  6. Hydrogen has a +1 charge. Oxygen has a -2 charge.

  7. What are 3 special properties of water?

  8. Surface Tension Capillary Action Specific Heat

  9. Explain what Specific Heat means

  10. Specific Heat: amount of energy needed to increase temperature by 1⁰C Back to Menu Final Jeopardy

  11. Define 3 parts / characteristics of a wave.

  12. Crest: highest point Trough: lowest point Wavelength: distance between 2 crests / troughs Wave Height: distance from crest to trough Frequency: number of waves during a certain interval of time

  13. What causes tides, and how often do tides occur?

  14. The gravity of the Moon & Sun cause tides. Tides occur every 12½ hours.

  15. What are Spring & Neap tides, and when do they occur?

  16. Spring tide is the greatest difference between high & low tide. Neap tide is the smallest difference.

  17. Waves do not move water forward. Explain why, and what happens when waves reach the shore.

  18. Wind energy is transferred through the water. Near the shore, wave height increases as length decreases, causing wave to break. Back to Menu Final Jeopardy

  19. Two natural disasters we have studied this chapter are...

  20. Tsunamis and El Nino

  21. What causes a Tsunami and where does it occur?

  22. An earthquake in the ocean floor.

  23. What is Upwelling and how does El Nino affect it?

  24. Upwelling is when warm water is pushed away by wind and cold water rises. El Nino brings more warm water, preventing upwelling.

  25. What is a Tsunami like in the open ocean compared to as it reaches shore? What causes this difference?

  26. In the open ocean, tsunamis have a small wave height, but massive wavelength. On shore, the length rapidly decreases from friction, causing the height to spike. Back to Menu Final Jeopardy

  27. What are the 2 types of currents?

  28. Surface currents and Deep currents.

  29. What causes a surface current? What is the strongest surface current in the N. Atlantic Ocean?

  30. Surface currents are driven by wind. The Gulf Stream.

  31. What kind of currents affect climate and how?

  32. Surface currents heat or cool air above them, affecting weather of land nearby.

  33. What is the Coriolis Effect?

  34. The rotation of the Earth causing the path of winds and waves to curve in relation to Earth’s surface. Back to Menu Final Jeopardy

  35. What do we mean by water “cycle?”

  36. Water moves from bodies of water, land and living things to the atmosphere and then back.

  37. What are the 3 “steps” or phases of the water cycle?

  38. Evaporation, Condensation and Precipitation.

  39. What living things give off the most water? What is this called?

  40. Plants release water through Transpiration.

  41. Explain how a cloud forms.

  42. Water vapor is carried to the colder upper atmosphere. It condenses on tiny dust particles in the air. Back to Menu Final Jeopardy

  43. What 4 properties of ocean water change with depth and how do they change as you go deeper? 10 60 30

  44. STOP

  45. As depth increases… Temperature decreases Salinity increases Density increases (salty & cold) Pressure increases
