4. Conversational past (Ich habe Golf gespielt, er hat nichts gemacht.) is used for relating events that have already happened. As its name implies, it is generally used in speaking—for conversation. • Another form of the past tense is the simplepast, also called the imperfect. A few verbs use this form for conversation. The two most common are sein (to be) and haben (to have). Here are some examples: • Ich hatte Kopfschmerzen. (I had a headache.) • Ich hatte kein Geld. (I had no money.) • Ich war nicht hier. (I wasn’t here.) • Ich war im Kino. (I was in the theaters.)

5. The simple past of haben is shown below. • Notice the endings. • Er, sie and es take an –e (hatte), not a –t as in the present tense (Er hat ein Auto versus Er hatte ein Auto).
