  1. Igor Solonkovich Grows Up in the Venice of the North Igor Solonkovich is originally from Saint Petersburg, the second largest city in Russia. Igor grew up on the Neva River of St. Petersburg, and learned its classic history first hand. Solonkovich’ hometown of Saint Petersburg is a highly Westernized city, a veritable industrial engine of commerce and Western products and manufacturing. As a child, Igor saw daily his city’s industry and historically classical architecture, and learned its nickname, the Venice of the North.

  2. Igor Solonkovich Russian Passion for Chess Igor Solonkovich is a devotee of chess, and today plays competitively over the internet and in local tournaments of Ramsey, New Jersey. Doubtless, Igor learned his early love of chess in his native city Saint Petersburg, Russia, which also has a long-standing love affair with boating, equestrianism, football, hockey, basketball and chess. In a 1914 international tournament of chess funded by the Tsar, the title Grandmaster was first bestowed upon five players by Tsar Nicholas II.

Igor Solonkovich spent many happy and thoughtful hours as a child learning the numerous moves in chess, as it became a permanent part of his life.
