  1. WELCOME TO THE JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES

  2. 1 Peter 3:8-12 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; 9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For "He who would love lifeAnd see good days,Let him refrain his tongue from evil,And his lips from speaking deceit.11 Let him turn away from evil and do good;Let him seek peace and pursue it.12 For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil."

  3. LIVING IN A TROUBLED WORLD

  4. A TROUBLED WORLD • 1 Peter 3:13-17 And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled." 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

  5. A TROUBLED WORLD • Increasing hostility toward Christianity. In reality, this should be no real surprise to Christians • Job 5:7 Yet man is born to trouble, As the sparks fly upward. • Isaiah 8:22 Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.

  6. A TROUBLED WORLD • But God remains in control of this planet and all that goes on in it • Isaiah 14:24 The LORD of hosts has sworn, saying, "Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass, And as I have purposed, so it shall stand: • Amos 3:6 If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it?

  7. A TROUBLED WORLD • How do we secure our position and ourselves as the only light the world has in this era? • Matthew 5:14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. • Philippians 2:14-15 Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

  8. I. BE PASSIONATE FOR GOOD • Vs 13 - And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? • Exemplary – It is hard for people to do harm to good people • Galatians 6:9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. • 2 Thessalonians 3:13 But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary in doing good.

  9. II. BE WILLING TO SUFFER • Vs14 - But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled." • Expectation – Many people have suffered only for doing good (1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; • Example – Jesus Himself suffered and was killed so why would we expect anything different - John 15:20 Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

  10. III. BE FOCUSED ON GOD • Vs 15a - But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, • Emphasis– Instead of being intimidated by enemies, simply regard the Lord as HOLY • Isaiah 8:13 The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread. • Proverbs 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

  11. IV. BE READY TO DEFEND • Vs 15b - and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; • Exhibit – Give a defense for the reason that you live the way you do and for the hope you have. • Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

  12. V. BE PURE IN CONSCIENCE • Vs 16 - having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. • Exonerated – People may try to make you feel guilty • 1 Peter 2:11-12 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

  13. ARE YOU PREPARED TO LIVE IN A TROUBLED WORLD? • 1 Peter 4:12-19 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters. >>>

  14. ARE YOU PREPARED TO LIVE IN A TROUBLED WORLD? 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter. 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now "If the righteous one is scarcely saved,Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?"19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.

  15. ARE YOU PREPARED TO LIVE IN A TROUBLED WORLD? • We live in a world that is bringing trouble upon us so how will you fare? • When trouble and persecution comes will you be able to live as a Christian and remain a shining light in this world? • Are you prepared for living in a troubled world? Is Jesus Christ truly Lord of your life?
