  1. Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory “An intelligence is the ability to solve problems, or to create products, that are valued within one or more cultural settings.” By: Michelle Crain

  2. Howard Gardner Claims that all human beings have multiple intelligences. These intelligences can be nurtured and strengthened, or ignored and weakened. We can improve education by addressing the multiple intelligences of our students. He believes each individual has 9 intelligences.

  3. Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence • Well-developed verbal skills and sensitivity to the sounds, meanings and rhythms of words. • Manifestations of this intelligence: • Manipulate and use words • Effective use of language • Think in terms of words- not pictures • Can be written as well as spoken • Poets, writers, teachers, politicians etc…

  4. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence • Ability to think conceptually and abstractly , and capacity to discern logical or numerical patterns • Manifestations of this intelligence: • Numbers • Reasoning • Mathematical Concepts • Think conceptually in logical patterns • Scientists, engineers, accountants, etc…

  5. Musical Intelligence • Ability to produce and appreciate rhythm, pitch and timbre • Manifestations of this intelligence: • Produce music • Appreciate music • Understand music • Musician, singer, composer, etc…

  6. Visual-Spatial • Capacity to think in images and pictures, to visualize accurately and abstractly. • Manifestations of this intelligence: • Ability to perceive the visual • Think in pictures, not words • Vivid mental images • Navigators, artists, sculptors, etc…

  7. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence • Ability to control one’s body movements and to handle objects skillfully. • Manifestations of this intelligence: • Control body language • Manipulate objects • Expression through movement • Athletes, dancers, actors, etc…

  8. Interpersonal Intelligence • Capacity to detect and respond appropriately to the moods, motivations and desires of others. • Manifestations of this intelligence: • Ability to relate to others • Ability to understand others • Empathy • Counselor, politician, salesperson, etc…

  9. Intrapersonal Intelligence • Capacity to be self-aware and in tune with inner feelings, values, beliefs and thinking processes. • Self-reflection • Self-awareness • Understanding own state of being • Philosophers, theorists, researchers, etc…

  10. Naturalist Intelligence • Ability to recognize and categorize plants, animals and other objects in nature • Manifestations of this intelligence: • Observing and understanding patterns in the natural environment • Classification of species • Analysis of sounds • Conservationists, farmers, astronomers, zoologists, etc…

  11. Existential Intelligence Sensitivity and capacity to tackle deep questions about human existence, such as the meaning of life, why do we die, and how did we get here. “Tackling deep questions (life and death).”
