  1. Introducing Dornier Wines Stellenbosch, South Africa October 2011

  2. Family Tradition • It seems that the Dornier Family has always been guided by the quest for perfection, innovation and artistic inspiration. • Fifteen years ago, my father Christoph ventured into wines at a time when South Africa was at crossroads. • New to the industry and to the country we took an independent approach, working with a team of young and unbiased local professionals and international experts. • Today, with our three ranges of premium wines we showcase the potential and character of our terroir as well as our individual style. • Our wines offer elegance and freshness that appeal to the modern wine connoisseur. • Raphael Dornier, Director imagine

  3. Who we are • Dornier is a family-owned producer of premium wines in Stellenbosch, South Africa. • We have been able to establish a high profile for quality wines and innovative design and marketing. • We are united by some common beliefs. Our quest for perfection does not allow average to be good enough; We display courage to be individualistic; and tradition is a positive base for innovation. quality – creativity - style

  4. dornier – a place with tradition • South Africa has a heritage of more than 350 years of wine making. Tradition is a pillar of wine making at dornier. It is a basis from where we explore new ways to improve the quality of the wine and to show the character of our terroir. • We aspire to produce modern wines that will last to become the classics of tomorrow. 350 years of winemaking tradition

  5. ...diversity… • Located between the Helderberg and the Stellenbosch Mountain, one of the prime wine-growing areas of the world. Due to the cool False Bay breezes, we enjoy a Mediterranean Climate. The grapes ripen slowly and we harvest the fruit with perfect balance. The vineyards are within a radius of 3 kilometres; however, the Microclimates, soils, and slopes are diverse. diverse soils, Mediterranean climate

  6. …and imagination • Art is our point of departure. It is our approach to innovate. • We create wines that are contemporary, appealing to the wine lover of today and showing a clear identity of our region and those who made the wines. imagine how it could be

  7. The dornier logo • Leda and the swan has been one of the recurring mythological themes in art since the ancient Greeks. The story of passion & seduction is a reflection of the two natures of mankind, the metamorphosis from human to beast. The seduction of Leda by Zeus in disguised as a Swan is symbolised by the head with the two beaks on the dornier logo. Leda and the Swan A sudden blow: the great wings beating stillAbove the staggering girl, her thighs caressedBy the dark webs, her nape caught in his bill,He holds her helpless breast upon his breast. How can those terrified vague fingers pushThe feathered glory from her loosening thighs? And how can body, laid in that white rush,But feel the strange heart beating where it lies?A shudder in the loins engenders thereThe broken wall, the burning roof and towerAnd Agamemnon dead.                                                                                  Being so caught up,So mastered by the brute blood of the airDid she put on his knowledge with his powerBefore the indifferent beak could let her drop? W.B. Yeats

  8. dornier - creativity meets perfection • Diversity in the vineyards also means managing high complexity. A scientific and disciplined approach to vineyard management is rewarded with balanced and evenly ripe fruit with great expression and freshness. look at things from different angles

  9. dornier - creativity meets perfection • We vinify and age each block separately. This allows us to gain a superior knowledge of our vineyards and to produce blends that meet quality and style expectations. • Winemaker JC Steyn and his team create wines of seamless character and elegance with an approach that uses the best of traditional handcrafting methods and modern technology. Creativity allows us to explore new expressions of style and character. • It is our aspiration to create the perfect combination of Old World elegance and New World freshness and concentration blending with skill and style

  13. dornier - architecture • Designed by the artistic eye of Christoph Dornier, the winery is both a sculpture and a functional production facility. The shape and materials blend well into the surroundings. Closed to on side, the building is completely open with windows to the mountain side, allowing to enjoy the wonderful views on the Stellenbosch Mountain.

  14. dornier - the ranges • Dornier Range: Expressive wines with great class and concentration. DONATUS Stellenbosch Range: Our flagship red and white blends. Wine of elegance and freshness with local character. COCOA HILL Range: Widely appealing and great value.

  15. dornier DONATUS white – Western Cape • Cheinin Blanc, Semillon, lightly wooded • Parker’s Wine Advocate (USA): Rich, lush, silky-textured, and spicy, this is an appealing sweet nut-flavoured wine with excellent mouth-feel and length. 88 points • Stephen Tanzer’s Wine Enthusiast: Good pale color. High-pitched nose combines lime, white grapefruit, white flowers, snap pea and spearmint, plus hints of eucalyptus and banana. Fat and silky but zingy, with pungent flavours of gooseberry, eucalyptus and minerals. This offers terrific inner-mouth perfume and shows strong granitic character. Finishes quite long and brisk.

  16. dornier DONATUS red Stellenbosch • Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc • Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar: This alluring Cabernet Franc-Cabernet Sauvignon blend starts with aromas of black cherry, violets and black currant, leading into waves of black fruit and spice. Structured but smooth, it has a classic, ageable quality. Good minerality gives it an upright character. Delicious now, but definitely can be held.

  17. dornier Chenin Blanc - Swartland • Exceptional quality fruit is what distinguishes this wine. Fresh flavours of litchi, ripe, white pear and peach dominate the nose. A rich, full flavour profile is supported by a concentrated yet silky mouth-feel along with a distinct mineral quality adding a crisp finish to the wine.

  18. CABERNET SAUVIGNON MERLOT - Stellenbosch • Maiden Vintage • With this traditional yet very successful partnership of these two noble varieties, one is able to appreciate both varieties inherent characteristics. Cabernet Sauvignon offers the masculinity and body to the blend along with fine red berry aromas whereas Merlot offers its elegance and charm with its more refined, feminine tannin structure and subtle violet nuances. A succulent yet well balanced palate with a lovely lingering aftertaste.

  19. dornier MERLOT - Stellenbosch • This wine has an intense, deep red colour, dominated by a fine concentration of red fruits, cherry and plum, backed up by tones of cedar, spice and oak on the nose. The palate is typically reinforced by firm, ripe, yet elegant tannins bursting with fruit density and a well-integrated harmony between fruit and oak. • Excellently complimented by a balanced well-rounded acidity and a full aftertaste providing for great texture and superb longevity.

  20. dornier CABERNET SAUVIGNON - Stellenbosch • Displaying the typical opulent fruit common to this noble variety, this wine has been carefully aged as to only maintain and slightly enhance its natural characteristics. Nuances of fresh subtle cassis and spice dominate nose accompanied by licorice and tobacco notes. A fine yet powerfully structured palate that fills the mouth with richness and freshness while balancing the fruit beautifully and ending off with a complex long finish.

  21. dornier PINOTAGE - Stellenbosch • With its intense dark purple hue, this wine offers everything from earth- and mineral-laced aromas to fragrant plum and dark fruit characteristics well complemented by hints of licorice and cedar. The palate provides an elegant balance between a fine, yet powerfully styled tannin structure and an opulent fruit core comprising of wild berry and similar plum characteristic as found on the nose. The finish culminates in a variety of lingering flavours for a long, rich aftertaste.

  22. COCOA HILL Chenin Blanc • The Cocoa Hill Chenin Blanc is a delectably chic version of what used to be South Africa's Cinderella variety. Fresh, minerally and subtly aromatic on the nose, the wine entices with delicate aromas of white pear, ginger and citrus, gracefully balanced with lively acidity and a long aftertaste.

  23. COCOA HILL Sauvignon Blanc • With our Sauvignon blanc we aim at making a wine that is generally pleasing on the nose and the palate without the harsh acidity common to many South Africa Sauvignon blanc’s. Flavours of white pear, guava’s and asparagus dominate the nose with slight nuances of melon playing a supporting role. The palate possesses a lovely richness and fullness along with the fresh fruit flavours. The fresh but not excessive acidity provides for a long lasting aftertaste.

  24. COCOA HILL Rosé • Merlot • The initial attraction of this Rosé has to be its alluring colour. With nuances of strawberries and cream and some herbaceous notes on the nose all combine fantastically to present a fresh flavour packed appeal. On first entry the palate encounters great freshness and clean elegance with flavours of berries and some citrus too along with an inherent fullness due to the extended lees ageing. An all round wine that can truly be enjoyed with any occasion.

  25. COCOA HILL Red • Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec • This intensely dark coloured wine provides for a full flavor spectrum from ripe cherry and other red berry fruits backed up by hints of vanilla, mocha and liquorice aromas. Spicy oak and cigar box lingering tones support a full, fresh and lively palate with a dense, firm tannin structure and a well balanced integrated acidity leaving one with a persisting finish of sweet spice and smoke.

  26. JC Steyn - Winemaker • ‚As most South Africans, I believe I am privileged to live and work here. Much more so being a winemaker in one of the prime winegrowing areas of the world.
