  1. Vocabulary Set #2

  2. Central Processing Unit (CPU) The part of the computer hardware that controls all processing functions.

  3. 2. Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) The part of the computer’s CPU (central processing unit) that adds and compares numbers.

  4. 3. Control Unit The part of a computer’s CPU (central processing unit) that determines what action the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) will take.

  5. 4. Memory Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, refers to computer components, devices, and recording media that retain digital data used for computing for some interval of time.

  6. 5. Main Memory A storage area inside the computer that is used as a giant scratch pad for programs to load and use data. Main memory is usually built from random access memory (RAM) chips.

  7. 6. Random Access Memory (RAM) Chips used by a computer to temporarily store data; data in RAM is usually lost when a computer is switched off.

  8. 7. Read Only Memory (ROM) Computer Chips that store commands that make the computer run; data in ROM cannot be erased.

  9. 8. Input The method by which instructions and data are entered into the computer.

  10. 9. Processing Second Stage of data flow through a computer whereby data is edited, formatted, and otherwise changed.

  11. 10. Output The process in which information leaves a computer system, usually through a printer or storage device.

  12. 11. Input Device Any peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to a computer).

  13. 12. Storage Device A device for recording (storing) information (data). Storage devices retain items such as data, instructions, and information for retrieval and future use.

  14. 13. Output Device Any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by a computer to the outside world. Any computer component capable of conveying information to a user.

  15. 14. Data Processing Any process that uses a computer program to enter data and summarize, analyze or otherwise convert data into usable information.

  16. 15. Word Processing A computer application used for the production-including composition, editing, formatting, and possibly printing-of any sort of printable material.
