  1. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY BASED WATER RESOURCE SOLUTION MODEL FOR KARACHI PROF DR NASIM A. KHAN VICE CHANCELLOR JAN 2011

  2. Pakistan’s Water Scenario 3200 Gallons per day (GPD) 662 GPD WATER STRESS LEVEL

  3. Pakistan’s Water Scenario (Trillion Gallons) Source: Ten Year Perspective Development Plan 2001-11, Planning Commission

  4. Karachi Water Scenario 526 MGD SOURCE: KWSB

  5. CURRENT WATER SUPPLY & DEMAND SOURCE: KWSB 2007

  6. HAMDARD UNIVERSITY ALTERNATIVE ENERGY BASEDWATER SOLUTION MODEL (WSM)

  7. Concept WATER SUSTAINABILITY- CRISIS TO SOLUTION • The Crisis is Looming over Pakistan and is expected to create many civil issues. Instead of 45 gallons (standard of WHO) Karachi citizens are getting only 25 gallons/day. • The total being received for various utilities in Karachi for consumption is again200 million gallons less. It is therefore our responsibility to create awareness and process solutions for Water Crisis.

  8. Concept WATER SUSTAINABILITY- CRISIS TO SOLUTION • WATER SUSTAINABILITY – • River water will not be able to meet future demands • Changing weather patterns may also change water from rivers • Global and local warming is anticipated to reduce the snow accumulation in mountains thereby affecting river water adversely • Sustained water source is only sea

  9. Concept WATER SUSTAINABILITY- CRISIS TO SOLUTION • CRISIS TO SOLUTION • Provision of Fresh water • Sea water is the natural solution for lower Sindh and Balochistan’s coastal belt • Energy cost that comprise 80%-85% of operating cost can be reduced by using wind and other alternative means • Use of gravity to supplement Reverse Osmosis pressure will further reduce energy requirements • Wind lean period can be alleviated by extra additional storage • Wind turbine once locally made will reduce the cost as well as provide additional jobs

  10. CONCLUSION

  11. Similar Water pumping example in Karachi, Pakistan Concept is not theoretical as already similar examples exists in Karachi as follows

  12. 100-110 MGD Hub Dam Water Channel Arriving at Hub Water Pumping Station on Shahrah-e-Madinat AlHikmah

  13. HUB PUMPING STATION • AVERAGE WATER PUMPED= 110 TO 115 MILLION GALLONS / DAY (MGD) • HEIGHT OF STORAGE TANK= 182 FEET • SIZE OF PIPE= 66 INCHES • PUMPED IN TWO SETS WITH 5.8 MW AND 6.8 MW POWER SOURCE: HUB PUMPING STATION

  14. HUB WATER PUMPING STATION (SET-1) SOURCE: HUB PUMPING STATION

  15. HUB WATER PUMPING STATION (SET-2) SOURCE: HUB PUMPING STATION

  20. 80 MGD WATER STORAGE TANK SOURCE: HUB WATER FILTERATION PLANT

  21. CONCLUSION

  22. ASSOCIATED AREAS • RECYCLING OF WASTE SEWAGE WATER • TWO PIPE CONCEPT • RAIN WATER HARVESTING • INTEGRATED PLANNING FOR WATER • WATER CONSERVATION ENFORCED • DEVELOP RO TECHNOLOGY COMPONENTS LOCALLY TO REDUCE COST OF DESALINATION
